🇮🇹 Nonna Pia’s Sloppy Giuseppe Sandwich 🍅🥪
📋 Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef (or ground Italian sausage)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup crushed tomatoes (or tomato passata)
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp dried basil
- Salt & pepper, to taste
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Soft Italian sandwich rolls or ciabatta
- Optional: Fresh mozzarella slices, red pepper flakes, or fresh basil for topping
👩🍳 Directions:
1️⃣ Sauté the Aromatics:
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion and sauté until soft (about 3–4 minutes). Stir in garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
2️⃣ Cook the Meat:
Add ground beef (or sausage) and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat.
3️⃣ Simmer the Sauce:
Stir in tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10–15 minutes until the mixture thickens.
4️⃣ Cheese It Up:
Stir in grated Parmesan cheese and adjust seasoning if needed. Optional: add red pepper flakes for a little kick.
5️⃣ Assemble the Sandwich:
Spoon the hot, saucy meat onto split rolls. Top with fresh mozzarella (if using) and a few fresh basil leaves.
6️⃣ Serve:
Serve warm and embrace the mess — it’s called Sloppy Giuseppe for a reason!
🔥 Tip:
Toast the rolls lightly for extra texture, and serve with a side of Nonna’s roasted peppers or a simple arugula salad.
