Willie Nelson Opens Up in New Autobiography: A Life of Friendship, Struggle, and Song

Country music icon Willie Nelson has released his much-anticipated autobiography, Me and Paul: Untold Stories of a Fabled Friendship, offering fans an intimate look at his extraordinary life and his decades-long bond with longtime drummer and confidant Paul English. While the book celebrates a remarkable friendship spanning over 70 years, it also reveals a deeply personal and previously undisclosed chapter in Nelson’s life.

In a rare moment of vulnerability, Nelson recounts a time when despair nearly overwhelmed him. He shares a story of a suicide attempt from years ago—telling how, at one of his lowest points, he left a bar intending to end his life by placing his head on a train track. After 15 minutes, however, he returned to the bar, having stepped away from the brink.

Despite that dark period, Nelson emphasizes that his outlook today is one of gratitude, purpose, and resilience. Now in his 90s, he continues to lead an active life—jogging daily and singing to keep his lungs strong. His message is one of hope, grounded in the belief that “life is meant to be enjoyed and improved, not endured.”

The country legend also confirms he has no plans to retire. He remains committed to performing live and staying close to the music that has defined his life. “As long as I can still play and sing,” Nelson says, “I’ll keep going.”

With Me and Paul, Willie Nelson offers more than stories of fame and friendship—he delivers a candid reflection on survival, perseverance, and the healing power of music.
