REPUBLISHED: “We Still Remember” — Eight Years Since the Karatu School Bus Tragedy That Claimed 32 Young Lives

Eight years have passed since one of Tanzania’s most heartbreaking national tragedies—the Karatu school bus accident that took the lives of 32 children, two teachers, and a bus driver. The events of May 6, 2017, remain etched in the nation’s collective memory, a day that forever changed the lives of many and cast a long shadow over a hopeful morning.

The children, students of Lucky Vincent Primary School in Arusha, were en route to take a mock national exam—a milestone meant to prepare them for their academic future. That morning, full of promise and pride, ended in unspeakable loss when the school bus lost control on a rain-slicked, winding road in the mountainous Karatu District. The vehicle plunged into a ravine, and the aftermath revealed a scene of overwhelming devastation.

Families, first responders, and citizens across Tanzania united in grief. Vigils were held. National leaders extended condolences. The tragedy prompted an outpouring of solidarity, reflection, and a national call to improve transportation safety—particularly for schoolchildren.

Though years have passed, the memory of those young lives continues to resonate. Annual commemorations remind us that while the pain may soften, it never disappears. Communities still gather to remember, honor, and reflect—ensuring that these children are not forgotten.

We still remember. We always will.
